The Journal of Workers Compensation, Spring 2009, "Is There A Doctor in the House? Provider Trends in Workers Compensation," by Dean Stiles, Director of Network Management, and Brannon Transue, Director of Information Management.
The article provides examples of how controlling the fees paid to providers through state fee schedules or through PPO contracts has led providers to search for other methods of obtaining the revenue that the providers demand, including seeing patients more frequently, billing for more services per visit and prenegotiating fees that exceed the mandated limits. Some of the providers who do not want to look for the alternate revenue sources are simply refusing to treat WC claimants, impacting our ability to provide access to the right providers in our networks.
